Classic Collection : Spooner Kloth "New" Merrie Monarch
- "New" Merrie Monarch
- Reyn Spooner's Iconic Spooner Kloth Shirt
Founded in 1963, the Merrie Monarch Festival honors the legacy of King David Kalakaua, who inspired the perpetuation of Hawaiian traditions, language and the arts. The weeklong festival, held March 31- April 6, features an internationally acclaimed hula competition, craft fairs, an art show, hula shows, and a grand parade through Hilo town. This is the Festival's 50th Anniversary.
“Our inspiration for the shirt came from a quote by the Merrie Monarch himself, King David Kalakaua: ‘Hula is the language of the heart, therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people.’”
The shirt features imagery from all the festival’s dance competitions, the eruption of Kilauea Volcano, and the iconic scene of Mauna Kea from the festival. A variety of Hawaiian musical instruments along with portraits of King Kalakaua and Queen Kapiolani further add to the illustrative narrative.
Available in reverse print pullover or button front style.
Spooner Kloth: 55% Combed Cotton, 45% Polyester.
Introduced by Reyn Spooner in 1964, this traditional classic has become the oxford cloth of the islands.
