Celebrating “The People’s Place”

For our Endless Summer campaign, we were fortunate to spend time at the Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows, a place where history and hospitality come together in a way that feels uniquely Maui. Walking onto the property is like stepping back in time—the resort has been a beloved gathering place since it first opened in 1962 as the very first hotel on Kāʻanapali Beach.

Long before Maui was known as a global destination, West Maui’s economy centered on sugarcane. The land that now holds the resort was once part of the Pioneer Mill plantation, until Royal Lahaina helped transform the coastline into the birthplace of modern Hawaiian tourism. Over the years, it became famous for its relaxed bungalows, tennis ranch, and the Myths of Maui Lūʻau—still one of the island’s longest-running shows.

But beyond the amenities, what has always made the Royal Lahaina so special is its spirit. Loved equally by travelers and kamaʻāina (local residents), it earned the nickname “The People’s Place”—a title that captures both its accessibility and its deep connection to community.

Today, just like Reyn Spooner, the Royal Lahaina continues to carry forward a legacy of timeless tradition, welcoming guests into an experience that feels both classic and enduring.
