Twin Fin Brings the Aloha Everywhere
For Twin Fin, music has always been rooted in friendship and a shared love of the Islands. What started with Robbie and Tyler making music together in Hollister, California eventually found its way to O‘ahu, where the band took shape and built the breezy, feel-good sound they’re now known for. With Chase and Zack rounding out the lineup, Twin Fin has grown from backyard jam sessions on the North Shore into one of Honolulu’s most exciting live acts, selling out shows, touring the Mainland, and bringing their island-born energy to audiences far beyond Hawai‘i. We caught up with the band while they were out on tour to talk about life on the road, the crowds they’ve met along the way, and what they’re most excited to get back to when they return home.
How’s life on the road been treating you guys?
Touring is like having the most demanding job of all time while also being on the ultimate guy’s trip. We’ve been exhausted, but we’re all having the time of our lives meeting incredible people from all over the Mainland. We could be eating a little more fruit and a lot less truck stop food, but other than that, spirits are high.
Love it. What’s been your favorite stop or show so far?
Every spot has been an absolute blast and we’ve loved them all. However, our Denver show was probably the most electric. We have always had a lot of fans in Denver and tons of friends we met in Hawai‘i flew in to support us. Our keyboard player’s family also lives out there, so it was great for them to see a show. Overall, just a fantastic night.
Has anything surprised you about touring this time around?
Every night is a surprise. We are still fairly new to touring the Mainland, so a lot of the shows are in cities we’ve never even been to. But every crowd is just as energetic as our crowds back in Honolulu. To think that our music translates to people who live thousands of miles away is wild to me and we all are so stoked. Also, dudes are pulling up to venues in Texas wearing aloha shirts and cowboy boots, which is super cool.
What’s been on repeat in the van lately?
It’s been a fun blend. Our photographer has been obsessed with Ella Langley, so we listen to “Choosin’ Texas” 8–10 times a day (not an exaggeration). There’s a lot of heavier stuff like Dexter and the Moonrocks and Treaty Oak Revival. I’ve been going through a bit of an Eagles kick as well. When we’re tired of music we’ve been listening to Empire of the Summer Moon by S.C. Gwynne, an audiobook about the rise and fall of the Comanche.
After being away for a while, what’s the first thing you want to do when you get back home to Hawai‘i?
I’m going to jump in the water as soon as possible to catch a few waves. The forecast looks good for both Town and North Shore so we’re gonna hope it stays that way. I also am going straight to Foodland to get a poke bowl.
