MEET THE ARTIST
Dave Van Patten is a Grammy Award-winning illustrator and muralist known for his colorful, surreal, and irreverent style.
His work has appeared on album covers, city walls, and in galleries around the world — blending dark humor, 1960s surrealism, and psychedelic album art into visuals that are instantly recognizable: a heady mix of chaos, color, and creativity.
In 2023, Van Patten took home the Grammy for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package for the Grateful Dead’s In and Out of the Garden: Madison Square Garden ’81 ’82 ’83 box set — a nod to his deep roots in the Dead’s visual legacy.
“MY STYLE HAS WORKED SO WELL FOR THE GRATEFUL DEAD BECAUSE WE HAVE SIMILAR MINDSETS OF BEING FAIRLY LAID-BACK AND SIGNIFICANTLY WEIRD IN NATURE.”

ABOUT THE PRINT
CAN ANYONE HAVE
MORE FUN IN PARADISE?
Dave imagined a “Hawai’i-themed fantasy-land in another world” — filled with flying dolphins, surfing Bertha, UFOs, living mushrooms, and plenty of far-out details waiting to be discovered.
The result is a hand-illustrated, kaleidoscopic tribute that merges the Dead’s signature psychedelic art style with classic Reyn Spooner Aloha — a bold, colorful, and joyfully strange print that celebrates six decades of the legendary Grateful Dead in true island style.
