Spooner Spotlight: Royal Hawaiian Catamaran

To launch our 2023 Transpac Race shirt, we had the pleasure of sailing on the Royal Hawaiian catamaran built by Rudy Choy and CSK Designs (the originators of the modern Catamaran), capturing epic photos of the boat out on the water.

The company, a partnership between Rudy Choy, Alfred Kumalae, and Warren Seaman, is responsible for some of the fastest and most innovative catamarans ever created – including multiple winners of the Transpac Race.

The Transpacific Yacht Race or Transpac, runs from the Point Fermin buoy in San Pedro and ends off Diamond Head in Hawaiʻi, is globally recognized by sailors as one of yachting's premier offshore races. This year will be the 52nd running of the bi-annual race and features over 60 entrants hoping to complete the 2,560-mile sail across the Pacific Ocean.

The Royal Hawaiian is a classic 52 ft Hawaiian luxury catamaran built in 1968 that was designed for comfort and safety. Spending time on the boat, the attention to detail and craftsmanship is immediately apparent.

Passionate about preserving the traditional methods of boat building and known for his attention to detail and use of only the best materials, Rudy Choy is considered a master boat builder producing boats that are highly regarded worldwide.
